Brihaspati Puja (Guruvar Vrat Puja) – A Sacred Ritual for Prosperity, Wisdom, and Divine Blessings The Brihaspati Puja, also known as the Guruvar Vrat Puja, is a deeply revered Hindu ritual dedicated to Brihaspati Dev, the celestial teacher of the Gods and the divine ruler of the planet Jupiter. Observed every Thursday (Guruvar), this Puja is performed to invoke the blessings of Brihaspati Dev and Lord Vishnu, as the Guru is considered an embodiment of Vishnu himself. Devotees observe this sacred fast to attract prosperity, wisdom, marital harmony, academic growth, and to pacify the malefic effects of a weak Jupiter (Guru Dosha) in their birth chart. 1. Preparations Before the Puja Day of Worship: Thursday, known as Guruvar or Brihaspativar, is devoted to Brihaspati Dev. Vrat (Fasting): The observer takes a vow to fast from sunrise to sunset. Traditionally, only one salt-free meal is consumed after the evening Puja. Color Significance: Yellow is the sacred color of the day, symbolizing knowledge, purity, and divine light. Devotees wear yellow clothes and apply a tilak of yellow sandalwood or turmeric paste on their forehead. Even the altar and offerings are adorned in shades of yellow. Cleanliness & Purity: Devotees begin the day with an early morning bath, maintaining utmost cleanliness. It is customary not to wash hair or clothes on Thursdays while observing this Vrat. Altar Setup: A sanctified altar is prepared using a yellow cloth, and idols or images of Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev are placed on it for worship. 2. The Ritual (Puja Vidhi) The Puja begins with a Sankalp (solemn vow) to observe the fast with devotion and sincerity. Every element of this worship carries deep spiritual meaning. Offerings (Samagri): Devotees present auspicious yellow items to the deities, including: Fresh yellow flowers (especially marigold) Turmeric, saffron, and yellow rice (Akshat) Chana dal (split Bengal gram) and jaggery (gud) Yellow sweets like besan laddoo or halwa as Bhog Lighting the Lamp: A ghee diya (lamp) is lit, symbolizing the light of divine wisdom and spiritual guidance. Worship of the Banana Tree: In many regions, a banana tree is revered as a manifestation of Brihaspati Dev or Lord Vishnu. The devotee pours water mixed with turmeric, chana dal, and jaggery at its roots. A diya is placed near the tree, and prayers are offered. Interestingly, devotees avoid eating bananas on this day and instead donate them, signifying selflessness and humility. Chanting & Recitations: This is the heart of the Puja. Devotees chant powerful Brihaspati Mantras—especially the Brihaspati Beej Mantra—108 times, followed by listening to or reciting the Brihaspati Vrat Katha, which narrates the divine significance and rewards of the Vrat. Aarti: The Puja concludes with a soulful Aarti, where a lighted lamp is waved before the deity while singing devotional hymns, filling the surroundings with positive vibrations and gratitude. 3. Concluding the Vrat After sunset, the devotee performs the evening Aarti and then breaks the fast by consuming the sacred Prasad—the offerings made during the Puja, usually consisting of yellow sweets, chana dal, and jaggery. Meal Guidelines: The single meal allowed on this day must be salt-free and preferably made with yellow ingredients, such as besan or ghee-based dishes. Charity (Daan): Charity is considered the soul of this Vrat. Devotees offer yellow items such as chana dal, turmeric, yellow clothes, and even gold (if affordable) to Brahmins, the needy, or temples. Such donations enhance the positive influence of Jupiter, bringing wealth, knowledge, and stability into one’s life. The Spiritual Essence of Brihaspati Puja The Brihaspati Puja is more than a ritual—it is a divine journey that blends fasting, purity, and devotion into one harmonious act of worship. By aligning with the benevolent energy of Guru (Jupiter), devotees invite abundance, happiness, and clarity into their lives. It is believed that those who observe this Puja with sincere faith experience growth in wisdom, success in education and career, and lasting peace and harmony in relationships. In essence, the Brihaspati Vrat is a beautiful reminder that when guided by wisdom and devotion, life naturally moves toward prosperity and divine grace.
